KOK

KOK, contemporary opera by Þórunn Gréta Sigurðardóttir, produced by Svartur Jakki.

KOK is a contemporary by Icelandic composer Þórunn Gréta Sigurðardóttir, produced by the theatre group Svartur jakki. KOK is composed for mezzosopran, violin and harp.

The poetry- and art book KOK (i.e. Throat) by the Icelandic writer Kristín Eiríksdóttir attracted well deserved attention when it was published in 2014 and was nominated for the Icelandic Literature Awards. Kristín’s poems are unusually direct and deal with love and hate, longing and indifference, relationships and communication and lack thereof. The poems reveal human instincts in all its glorious fragility. Þórunn Gréta heard Kristín read from the book and knew immediately that she wanted to compose an opera based on the poems.

The contemporary opera KOK premiered in May 2021. The production works interdisciplinary, blending together the poems, music, staging, video and lights.

KOK was nominated to Gríman, the Icelandic Theatre Awards, in 2021 for music of the year and singer of the year. KOK won the Icelandic Music Awards in 2021 Contemporary Music Performance of the Year. The piece was also nominated for Composition of the year, Singer of the year and two nominations for performer of the year.

KOK is available for touring. For available touring periods, dossier and more information, contact producer Ragnheiður Maísól.
